Anyone who is familiar with Legs McNeil?s Please Kill Me (which is required reading for all of you) should know what to expect. McNeil now tackles the world of porn (I will avoid any and all puns about this being an ?oral history?). Beginning with the nudie-cutie era and ending with the effects of AIDS on the industry, The Other Hollywood covers it all, good and bad. The industry?s most prominent figures (Linda Lovelace, John Holmes, Traci Lords) are all covered at length. What really sets this apart from other efforts on the subject is its in-depth look at the Mafia?s involvement in the porn world. That subject is told from both the side of the mob (and those who dealt with them) and the F.B.I. (including a few undercover types whose lives were not changed for the better). That aspect of the book is recommended for anybody who liked Goodfellas or Donnie Brasco. This book is far from a glorification (it?s filled with drugs, suicides, and murder), but at the same time it?s not judgmental or condescending either. Many of the key players, both in front and behind the camera, are interviewed. I only wish it answered my question ?whatever happened to Stacey Donovan??.
