The Story of the Ramones
This documentary is essential for any real
Ramones fan. Granted, much of this covered
in Monte Melnick?s book
and the Bible of punk rock Please Kill Me,
but it's still a must see, warts 'n' all look at
one of the greatest and most influential bands
of all time. All the members are interviewed,
including Richie (who finally gets to tell his
side of the story and Clem "Elvis Ramone"
Burke. I'm surprised that Johnny
cooperated because he comes off (at best)
as a total jerk (not unexpected if you read
the Melnick book). Fortunately, we're not
subjected to too much of Dee Dee's drug life
(after Hey! Is Dee Dee Home, I don?t think
I could handle another Dee Dee drug story).
Joey's OCD and Cancer, Dee Dee?s life as
Dee Dee King, the money battles, Phil
Spector's guns, the personal animosity?
it's all here. I did have a problem with some
of the people interviewed since their inclusion
seems to be based solely on being on the
weak "official" Ramones tribute album. If
you want to believe that they were the way
they were portrayed in Rock 'n' Roll High
School, you?ll want to skip this. If you want
the real story (minus the "Behind the Music"
sleaze sensationalism), then watch this. - Evil Larry , posted 05/08/05
