Rebirth 2008, The Hawai’i Interactive Arts Festival
Four days of inspirational interactive art, including a twenty foot tall phoenix, a gathering of Hawaiian fire spinners, live music, DJs, a luau, themecamps, costumes, and more.
January 14, 2008 Honolulu HI – Ka Pilina presents the third annual Rebirth 2008, an official Burning Man Regional event, celebrating interactive art here in Hawai’i. This event is a nonprofit arts festival: It is a gathering where anyone from artists to builders, musicians and stilt-walkers to face-painters and flame throwers can showcase any and all forms of participatory art they feel so inclined to share in the company of others. The event is organized following the Burning Man 10 Principles, such as radical self-reliance and inclusion, working together, and leaving no trace behind after the festivities are over.
Rebirth 2008 will feature a giant central phoenix sculpture as well as many other interactive art installations. There will be a gathering of Hawaiian fire dancers with fire artists from across the islands. Art installations and performances (including 4 days of DJs, live music, dancing, drumming, VJs, and more) from local Hawaii and mainland participants will make the event come alive on the Big Island from May 15th through 18th. At Rebirth 2008 participants will interact not only with costumes, music, and art, but also through “gift economy”. This means that participants exchange all goods and services exclusively through the giving of gifts freely, as all commerce, sponsorship, and advertising will be banned inside the event.
Ka Pilina officers and staff will be on hand at the Centercamp of the event to answer questions about Ka Pilina, Burning Man, and to offer as much general support and inspiration as can be mustered. With events and participation on four islands, plans for two festivals in 2008, and a themecamp at Burning Man 2008, Ka Pilina is certainly gearing up for a wild (and busy) year.
Rebirth 2008, the Hawaii Interactive Arts Festival” takes place on the island of Hawaii near the area of Pahoa, from May 15th to 18th. Tickets will be sale January 25th starting at $40 for an event that lasts four days and three nights.
